Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT: The Royal Oak Concept turns twenty
The Royal Oak Concept first welcomed us in 2002 to celebrate the Royal Oak's 30th anniversary. To mark the occasion, Audemars Piguet has released a special edition – initially limited to one piece – that draws inspiration from the concept car. However, since the demand for this version was so great, the watchmaker decided to increase the number to 150 pieces. This powerful model continues to drive the rise of a new aesthetic in 21st century haute horlogerie and now celebrates its 20th anniversary.
The new Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT features a sandblasted titanium case with a diameter of 44 mm. The titanium case of the watch is paired with a green ceramic bezel for the first time, highlighting the high-tech aesthetics of the Royal Oak concept.
Although green ceramic was first introduced to Audemars Piguet in the Royal Oak Offshore Collection in 2018, this year the material made its debut in the Royal Oak Concept. The black movement can be seen through the sapphire caseback. The 16.1mm thick case features green ceramic buttons and titanium button guards.
Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT DialThe dial stays true to its design specifications. The architectural movement is again in focus. The green ceramic trim subtly ensures color uniformity of the various elements and overall consistent color. The new Royal Oak concept adds a little contrast with the help of several shades of rose gold.
The rose gold hands with luminous material and the AP logo at 12 o’clock stand out against the dark tones of the dial. Meanwhile, white hour markers on the black inner bezel provide a striking contrast. Audemars Piguet displays the second time zone, also known as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), on a sapphire disc at 3 o'clock. It is set via the pusher at 4 o'clock, and the time can be adjusted by one hour at the touch of a button.
The second time zone is displayed in 12-hour increments and consists of two discs arranged on top of each other. The first hour dial completes one revolution in 12 hours and is made of sapphire. The second day/night disc, on the other hand, completes one turn in 24 hours, is made of polished brass, and marks the day with one half in white and the other half in green for night. The crown position indicator at 6 o’clock has the letters H, N and R, which represent the time setting, neutral and winding positions of the winding stem, respectively.
Consisting of 348 individual parts, the 2954 hand-wound movement is equipped with a parallel double barrel system that combines the prestige of a flying tourbillon with an ultra-modern display. It ensures that the Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT runs for up to 10 days, providing a power reserve of approximately 237 hours.
The frictional force of the two barrels is simultaneously fed into the gear train through a single barrel and is used to compensate for torque fluctuations. This improves the accuracy and reliability of the Royal Oak concept.
The green rubber strap with sandblasted titanium AP folding clasp completes the style of the watch. The timepiece is available with an optional black rubber strap.
